Ground Spikes and Surface-Mount Bases: One Bollard Design for Different Garden Surfaces
One garden can include soil, flower beds, concrete paths and stone paving. Supplying both a ground spike and a surface-mount base gives customers a practical way to use a coordinated bollard design in different locations: a spike for suitable soil, or a base secured with appropriate screws and anchors for a suitable hard surface.

A real question dealers need to answer
A homeowner preparing a driveway asked whether short bollard lights should use ground stakes or a solid foundation. The discussion raised concerns about lights working loose and leaning. This is a purchasing question as well as an installation question: the correct mounting version and accessories should be agreed before the order is placed.
A practical solution: supply both mounting options
Every household has a different garden layout, and even within one garden the installation surface can change from one light position to the next. A light beside a flower bed may stand in soil, while another beside the patio may need to be fixed to concrete or stone.
For customers who need this flexibility, we can supply both the ground spike and the surface-mount base with the bollard. The appropriate mounting option can then be selected for each position, while keeping a consistent lighting design throughout the garden.
For dealers and importers, this makes it easier to offer one coordinated design for mixed garden surfaces. Agree the selected model, compatible mounting parts and quantities in the order and packing list, including whether the required screws and anchors are supplied or sourced for the installation surface.
What are the two mounting options called?
Ground spike or ground stake describes the pointed mounting accessory used in suitable soil. Surface-mount base describes the base secured to a suitable hard surface with the specified fixings. These terms make the difference clearer than the broad phrase “ground mount”.
See the two mounting arrangements
Our aluminium product sheet shows GD-ABX029-1-stake-600 with a ground spike and GD-ABX029-1-base-600 with a surface-mount base. The images below show the two arrangements and their dimensions. For an order with both mounting accessories, confirm the compatible parts and pack contents for the selected bollard rather than relying on the model suffix alone.

Choose the mounting option at each position
| Question | Ground spike / stake | Surface-mount base |
|---|---|---|
| What needs checking? | Suitability of the soil and the specified spike installation. | A suitable supporting surface or foundation and the specified fixing arrangement. |
| What should the dealer request? | Spike dimensions, attachment details and installation instructions. | Base dimensions, fixing-hole layout and compatible fixing requirements. |
| What must not be assumed? | That any patch of soil will hold the light securely. | That a paving slab or thin surface is automatically an adequate foundation. |
For a garden bed, ask about the ground
Use the supplied ground spike where the garden bed has suitable soil and the installation meets the product instructions. Ask whether the position is established ground, recently filled soil or an area that is regularly disturbed. Allow the installer to assess the support conditions before confirming the installation method.
Keep the proposed location clear of ordinary garden maintenance routes where possible. A decorative bollard is not a vehicle-protection post; avoid recommending it as a barrier against cars or equipment.
For paving or a permanent layout, check the base detail
On concrete or stone, use the surface-mount base with fixings appropriate to the supporting surface. Before paving or other groundwork is completed, provide the installer with the actual base drawing and cable-entry requirements. This helps align the product selection with the preparation work.
The foundation, anchors and electrical installation must follow the product instructions and site requirements. A product photograph does not establish an anchor size, foundation depth or allowable load, so those details should not be guessed from the image.
Confirm these items before the customer orders
- Location: garden bed, path edge, paving or another surface.
- Selected bollard and mounting parts: confirm the model and the compatible ground spike and surface-mount base.
- Pack contents: specify both mounting accessories and their quantities, and state whether screws and anchors are included or supplied separately.
- Installation drawing: check dimensions, attachment points and cable entry.
- Site preparation: have the installer assess the ground or supporting structure.
- Electrical specification: confirm supply requirements and suitable installation by a qualified installer where required.
A practical answer your sales team can use

We can supply this bollard with a ground spike and a surface-mount base, so you can choose the appropriate mounting option for each position while keeping the same lighting design. We will confirm the accessories and fixing requirements with your order.”
Frequently asked questions
Is a spike always the easier choice?
Not necessarily. It still needs suitable ground and the specified installation method. Convenience should not replace checking the support conditions.
Does a base-mounted light always need concrete?
The suitable support and fixing method depend on the product and site. Ask for the installation drawing and let the installer confirm the appropriate foundation or existing structure.
Can I receive both a spike and a surface-mount base?
Yes. We can arrange supply of both mounting accessories for the selected bollard. Confirm the compatible parts and quantities in the order and packing list, so the customer knows exactly what is included.
Does supplying both options make the light suitable for any surface?
No. The appropriate option still depends on the soil or supporting surface and the product instructions. Having both accessories provides a choice; the installer must still check the fixing conditions at each position.
