Can Cars Drive Over Resin In-Ground Lights?
Can cars drive over resin in-ground lights? Review real Hengen demonstrations and the model, load evidence and installation details buyers should confirm.

Yes—resin in-ground lights can be designed for vehicle drive-over use. For a distributor, the useful question is whether the particular model and installed assembly suit the customer’s traffic conditions. Hengen’s round and square demonstrations show vehicles passing over resin in-ground light samples. A stated load limit requires its own supporting record.
Start with the concern behind the question
A homeowner asked how to protect driveway lights from being crushed, specifically mentioning their plastic underground bodies. Another sought low-profile replacements after a vehicle crushed a driveway light. These are individual customer accounts, but they explain the objection a retailer may hear: “Will plastic be strong enough?” Read the question · Read the replacement request.
Resin describes a material family, not a load rating
The word “plastic” alone does not describe the complete construction. Buyers should look at the cover, lens, housing and how the assembled light is supported after installation. Hengen identifies GD-PGL01, GD-PGL02, GD-PGL03 and GD-PGL04 as members of this in-ground series and confirms an 8 mm glass thickness. That dimension is a product specification; it is not a load rating.
Drive-over resin products are an established category: Fumagalli describes its CECI 120 as a drive-over in-ground luminaire made from shockproof resin. That is a reference for the category, not evidence that different manufacturers’ products have identical performance. Fumagalli CECI 120.
Watch the round and square drive-over demonstrations
The two recordings show separate round and square samples, vehicle movement over the test position and handling of the samples afterwards. Use them to discuss the actual construction with a customer. The recordings do not provide a measured wheel load or a rated maximum load, and no separate load-test report is currently available for these demonstrations.

What should a buyer confirm before ordering?
| Check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Exact model | Identify the ordered configuration and the sample shown in any demonstration. |
| Traffic | Describe vehicle type, expected frequency and whether vehicles may turn, stop or brake over the light. |
| Load evidence | Ask what load was applied, how it was applied and how the assembly was supported. Do not substitute vehicle total weight for a measured load on the fitting. |
| Installation | Obtain the model’s mounting instructions and confirm the supporting construction. |
| Water protection | Review ingress protection separately; a drive-over demonstration does not establish IP67. |
Installation belongs in the purchasing discussion. For example, ERCO’s own drive-over instructions specify foundation and manoeuvring restrictions for its products. Hengen’s installation requirements must be confirmed for the selected model rather than copied from another manufacturer. See the manufacturer’s installation example.
A useful answer for your customer
“This series uses a resin construction, and we can show you round and square samples in actual vehicle drive-over demonstrations. Let us match the model and installation requirements to your driveway before confirming the application.”
